The Food & Water Testing division of Sonic Healthcare began its operations in 1990, in Emu Plains (Western Sydney, NSW). Over the years it has developed and expanded to become a widely recognised and well-respected organisation; providing a comprehensive range of fully accredited testing services.

The laboratory relocated from Emu Plains in July 2004, to a new purpose-built facility in nearby Penrith. This move helped enable a seamless service to our customers - despite a rapid increase in workload and expansion of our client base.

Sonic Food & Water Testing have become one of the largest environmental microbiology laboratories operating in New South Wales. Although work is primarily performed for NSW companies, we also receive samples from across the states and territories of Australia.

The division consists of a team of expert scientists, working in a modern state-of-the-art laboratory, utilising methods of the highest standards - to provide you with peace of mind.

Sonic Food and Water Testing currently employ 16 staff. The laboratory manager is Tim Morgan.

Testing and Clientele

We endeavour to advise clients of any changes that may occur in the testing of their product due to new regulations, or changes in methodology. We also take pride in ensuring that our service is of the highest standard as well as being cost-effective for our clients.

Clients we currently serve include those from:

  • councils (swimming pools, environmental monitoring programs and assessments)
  • water treatment companies (cooling towers, waste waters and effluent)
  • nursing homes (thermostatic mixing valves and Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points - HACCP - programs)
  • food manufacturers and processors (raw materials, finished product and HACCP programs)
  • bottlers of drinking water
  • importers and exporters (AQIS and Imported Foods Inspection Schemes)
  • oyster growers and shellfish programs
  • environmental consultants (HACCP and Environmental Impact Assessments)

In addition to Food and Water testing, we also perform testing on surfaces and air samples. Examples of testing include:

  • Dust bacteria and fungal counts
  • Hygiene surface testing - for plate count and a large selection of pathogenic and indicator organisms
  • Other surface testing including air-conditioning - for plate count and a large selection of pathogenic and indicator organisms
  • Meat carcass surface swabs - E. coli, Salmonella, and plate count
  • Air samples - bacteria
  • Air samples - fungi
  • Bacterial and fungal isolate identification.
